Born on 12th March 1956, music came naturally to Chandan Das who was raised in Murshidabad, the land of the Nawabs of Bengal. Ghazal, Thumri and Kathak were his early influences since the very soil of his homeland was an important seat of music. This setting was instrumental in his plunge into music at an early age.
His initiation into the world of music was through his elder sister. His inborn instinct for music got further refined under the tutelage of Ustad Moosa Khan at the tender age of 8 years. He took further training of classical music from Pandit Mani Prasad of Delhi.
Like most veterans, he too faced the hesitation and unpleasantness shown by his family towards his desire in taking up music as a profession. He left home and went to Patna, where he performed at A.I.R., the influence of Mehdi Hassan's tapes left an unmistakable imprint on his voice and helped him carve his own, distinct, inimitable singing style.
