Debapriya’s mellifluous voice singing a Baul number is an immersive experience after all the noise and dust of the day. An alumnus of Jadavpur University in Comparative Literature, Debapriya is a singer by intent and purpose and sings folk songs from the Eastern part of India. Debapriya started her musical training at the age of ten from classical exponents like Bela Raha,Meera Banerjee,Manju Bhattacharya, Biswajit Dasgupta and later from the greatest folk singer of Bengal Shri Amar Paul…Though trained in North Indian Classical from Patiala Gharana and later Bishnupur gharana She always felt an inherent connect with the music of the subaltern, specially folk and country music. Her forte lies in presenting different Bengali folk songs specially bhatiali, bhawaiya, baul and Lalonshah. She has honed her skills by attending several workshops held by eminent big folk exponents and baul fakirs of Bolpur and Bangladesh specially those from Kushtia. She has been engaged in collecting songs by Lalon fakir and has also been doing playbacks in films and serials and is a regular guest on many television channels.
Debapriya has already got three folk albums to her credit..Dil ki daya and Mon Dariyaye from prime music has got her a huge number of fan followers. Her recent album released on world music day 2014 named Aarshinagar has given her immense popularity and success. She regularly performs in shows all over Bengal, and other parts of India and Bangladesh… Her uniqueness is the timber of her voice which makes her unique. Her music orientation is traditional yet modern, rustic yet touching the heart of millions of music loving city dwellers, thus making her an urban minstrel in the true sense.
