Manhar Udhas is a leading name in the field of playback singing in the Indian film world. A qualified mechanical engineer from Gujarat came to Mumbai in search of a job, joined an engineering firm. He was introduced to Kalyanji Anandji by producer Shri Nanubhai Gadhavi. His first break in film ‘Vishwas’ the song ‘Aap se hum ko Bichhade huve’ became a top charter in 1969. As he puts it “I am very lucky to get a break at the time where all the top legendry playback singers were in their youth and were on the top.He sang for ‘Purab Aur Pachhim’, ‘Rajasaab’, ‘Fareb’, ‘Kagaz ki nao’, ‘Saathi’, but his Major break came when he sang for S.D.Burman a duet with Lata Mangeshkar “Lute Koi Man Ka Nagar” for Amitabh Bachchan. A song composed by Usha Khama “Tu Is Tarha Se” for Raj Babbar was another hit.Thus Manhar Udhas though started as a voice resembling the great Mukesh, made his presence felt with his own style. He sang for Laxmikant Pyarelal some hit songs for films like Barkha Bahaz, Rajput, Amba etc. His song ‘Hum Tumhe Chahte Hai’ for Qurbani became a huge and hit and his name established, he sang another hit song for ‘Janbaaz’ ‘Har Kisi ko Nahi Milta’. Manhar Udhas got a golden opportunity in 1981, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Subhash Ghai’s ‘Hero’, Jackie Shroff’s debue making superhit film and all the songs for the Jackie Shroff, Tu meri janu hai’, ‘Pyar karnewale’, ‘Ding dong’ and he got teh entry in to Subhash Ghai comp. ‘Karma’, ‘Saudagar’, ‘Ram-Lakhan’, ‘Khal-Nayak’ were the other Subhash Ghai film in which Manhar gave hit songs like Mine rab se, Saudagar sauda kar, ILU ILU, Tera naam liya, Ae saheb ye thik nahin.
