About Prajna Dutta

He is currently in his final year of study at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata, studying Direction and Screenplay writing. His first short film as a student of SRFTI, “JE RAATE” was screened at IIFI Goa 2013 and is again scheduled to be screened at the “ImagineIndia International Film Festival” (IIFF) to be held in Madrid in May 2014. His first documentary as a student of SRFTI, “WITHIN AND WITHOUT” was screened at the Cut.In Film Festival 2013 in Mumbai. Though films are his first love he is equally passionate about music. His first music guru was Pandit V.G. Jog. He had training with Julian Marshall in songwriting at Dartington International Summer School, with Gabriella Boda Rechner in choral singing, with Hamish Hossain in composition. He is still continuing his training with Amyt Datta in guitar music. He worked as a Guest lecturer in the Film Studies Department of St. Xavier’s College and Loreto College, taking special classes on the Importance of Music in Cinema. In 2012 he composed music for the controversial Bengali movie “Nandigramer Chokher Paani”. He was a choir singer in the opera show, “Violetta a Traviata(2008) organized by Neemrana Music Foundation with artistes from Italy and France and in “Si Jetais Roi(2010), Organized by Neemrana Music Foundation with artistes from France, Srilanka and India and had the opportunity of meeting Pandit Ravi Shankar there. In 2010 he performed his own compositions at the Roundhouse Café in Devon, UK. As a music composer he has composed for Films Division India documentaries “Trance in Motion” and “Yes We Can”. As a director of photography and sound designer he has collaborated with ace musicologist Somjit DasGupta and made “Surer Simana”, a short documentary which premiered in February 2013 at University of Chicago’s graduate research workshop in Ethnomusicology on “Musical Instruments across the Bengal Borderlands”
