The Organisation of Musicians and Artists of Sikkim (OMAS) conducted a signature petition on MG marg in Gangtok for the introduction and passing of the Sikkim Artists’ Protection and Guarantee Act (SAPGA). SAGPA is designed to empower, protect and sharpen Sikkimese artistes engaged in creative fields. OMAS founding member Sonam Gyaltsen Bhutia talked about how a semi-autonomous body in the state could benefit the artistes.
The need was felt particularly for those who earn a living through creative arts. In view of a near absent ecosystem for artists in Sikkim, this bill can not only create a platform but also give every artist blanket protection of dignity and security. It also envisages at providing amphitheaters for artistes particularly in the field of music, fashion and dance, relaxation of taxes in the entertainment field and setting up of a semi-autonomous body for artist of Sikkim.
The act will further protect the tradition and culture of Sikkim and provides a platform to all the aspiring artists, event managers, and band managers. OMAS has thanked all artistes, creative individuals and citizens for the overwhelming support to the petition and come to sign the petition beside bad weather.
