During his college days in Raniganj, Abhijit was fascinated by indegenous tunes sung by tribal collies. The nostalgic childhood memories, strengthed with the inspiration received from Hemango Biswas encouraged Abhijit to spend almost a decade in remote corners of Bengal, Assam and Bihar learning folk songs and music. This rich tenor prompted eminent film-makers like G. Aravidan and Buddhadeb Dasgupta to use him as a playback singer in their films.
