Madhumita started out at the young age of six by learning khayals under her mother Shrimati Sabita Acharyya, an exponent of Bishnupur Gharana. But after she obtained her Masters in Music in the “cerebral” Bishnupur style, she chose to go the popular way. She received special training in Geet, Ghazal and Bhajan from exponents like Pandit Subodh Dubey, Shrimati Sabita Roy and Shri Nimai Dutta.Madhumita first performed on Doordarshan Kolkata at the age of 16. Then onwards, she has been a regular performer on Doordarshan, All India Radio and various music channels.Madhumita’s first stage performance was in Durgapur, West Bengal where she was born. She sang at the CollegeFest of Regional Engineering College when she was 16. She performed on various occasions in Kolkata and other places of West Bengal before moving to Ranchi. While at Ranchi, she was a regular performer on stage. Some of her notable performances were on the occasion of Jharkhand Foundation Day, the then Prime Minister Shri Atal Vihari Vajpayee’s visit to Jharkhand, the then President Prof. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam’s visit, Banga Sanskriti Sammelan Ranchi etc.
