Kendraka is the Sanaskrit word for a nucleus – Kendraka is the Sanskrit word for nucleus. Kendraka is a “Bass Guitar” led quartet, a band that is the convergence of the creative thoughts and energies of bassist and composer Mainak “Bumpy” Nag Chowdhury . The band performs compositions and arrangements which are written from Mainak a.k.a Bumpy’s personal space-the compositions are written from events in his life .In his quest to answer the question as to who he was as a contemporary artist who is conscious of his “Indian” roots, he created a new instrument called Maitrayee Bass which he is performing now.Along with his fellow artists, this is a collective endeavour that pushes the boundaries of rhythm, melody and genre. Kendraka draws its inspiration from the venerated traditions of east and west – Hindustani as well as Carnatic Classical music, and jazz – and is a band fuelled by an improvisational drive shared by all of the musicians, although they have different backgrounds. The stress at any given point of performance is to be “real” and be what the artist ” is” at that moment in life, the stress is on the organic interactive improvisational aspect of playing.
